Get prepared for your half-day single kayak trip!

You’ve been asking for it, and now here it is: the only kayak tour in the San Juan Islands consisting entirely of single kayaks! Part tour, part instructional, this saltwater journey bridges the gap for those of you who’ve been wanting a more comprehensive experience. This includes the best part of joining a guided kayak tour (your guide knows a lot about the San Juans), and an introduction to some of the basic skills that you will need to learn if you think you might want to become a sea kayaker. This trip itinerary is very similar to our regular Half Day Kayak Trip—we leave from our special kayak docks and venture out to explore the islands of Burrows Bay for three hours. Departure times vary, so please call to make a reservation.

Who is best suited for this trip?

  • Experienced kayakers who don’t have access to a boat, or are interested in building local knowledge.
  • Beginners interested in learning more kayaking skills.
  • Totally inexperienced people with a little athletic ability and a taste for adventure!

Limitations on who should sign up for this trip

  • Unless prior arrangements are approved, we can only take people 16 years and older, unless it is a private departure (4 or more guests).
  • For your comfort and enjoyment of the trip you should be reasonably fit and moderately athletic. Paddling a single kayak is a bit more work than when you have a partner in a tandem kayak and keeping the boat tracking straight is not as straightforward in the smaller boats. Also, your sense of balance should be fairly well developed as the single kayaks are not as stable. Capsizing is more likely when paddling a single kayak, so you should be prepared for that. We do have wet suits available for people who want to be ready for immersion.
  • Our individual weight limit for this special tour is 225 pounds. Larger folks may find the boats to be slightly uncomfortable for the duration of the trip. Please call if you have questions about this.
  • Our guides are very good at Risk Assessment and we trust their judgement. If they feel that any individual or group may compromise the safety of the others then that person may be asked to join our regular tour, or receive a full refund. Thank you for understanding!

Brand new for 2011, this trip is designed to appeal to kayakers, folks who are seriously thinking about becoming kayakers, and people who, well…just like a heightened sense of adventure. The itinerary is similar to our regular half day trip—we like to get our guests out to the three beautiful islands located in Burrows Bay. The twist is that everyone will be in a single (one-person) sea kayak, and we limit the group size to 5 people to maximize the personal attention that your guide will be able to give you.

What you need to know to get ready for your half-day single kayak trip!

I just returned home from an amazing kayak vacation with you folks, and I’m dreading a return to real life tomorrow. My head is still full of the San Juans and I wish that I could have stayed out for another day, or ten.

I did quite a bit of research before booking the trip and your company stood out clearly. You seemed more personable, friendly, and genuinely excited about what you do.

I also appreciated the realistic expectations on whale sightings.

My only regret is that I had to leave. Next time — five day trip!

Thanks again,
Julie Alexander
