San Juan Islands Sea Kayaking from Anacortes

We are definitely in the thick of summer right now. The weather has been absolutely terrific, and the kayaking has been amazing. Just yesterday both of the multiday kayaking trips that were out were treated to an amazing Orca (killer whale) encounter off of Cypress Head. Jeff Hoeben and his guests had them swim right by the kayaks. Jeff Porter and his guests were still in their campsite when the report came in that the whales were entering Bellingham Channel. All they had to do was walk down to the edge of the bluff and wait. As they often do, the whales put on a spectacular aerial display for everyone. Multiple breaches, lots of tail-slapping, and even a few cartwheels were witnessed....all with morning coffee still in hand.
Last week's Sucia Island trip was a great success. A few sprinkles in the morning had a few people worried, two folks even chickened out all together, but those who knew better had a blast. As expected, the weather cleared as soon as they arrived. Sunny skies and calm water made for some fantastic exploration of one of the classic kayaking destinations in the San Juan Islands.
With only a few weeks left before Labor Day Weekend we are filling up fast. The days are still long and the air temperature is consistently warm, I guess the Dog Days of Summer are upon us!
Incidentally, the "Dog Days of summer" come when Sirius, the "dog star", rises and sets with the sun. During ancient Roman times people thought that this brightest of all stars (in the Northern hemishere) actually projected heat onto the surface of the Earth. When it was in conjunction with the sun (July-September) the ancients believed that its heat added to the heat of the sun, creating a stretch of hot and sultry weather. They named this period of time, from 20 days before the conjunction to 20 days after, "Dog Days" after the dog star. -For what that's worth, I'm not sure, I just like that sort of anecdotal information!
