Winter Sea Kayaking, San Juan Islands and beyond

As expected, I haven't been diligent at posting reports this winter. It's not that we haven't been out on the water, we have, lots, it's simply that after messing around in boats, cleaning up, playing with my two boys, fixing dinner......well, you get the point. We've actually had some outstanding days out sea kayaking over the last couple of months. Some days were crazy with big winds, waves, currents, exciting conditions to say the least and true tests of our skills as sea paddlers. Many more were those serene mornings and afternoons where a loon's call could be heard from a mile across the water. Those are great moments in a sea kayak, the quiet contemplative kayaking where a fellow can really set the mind at ease.

Next week won't be that sort of venue though. In two days we are packing the kids into the truck and heading for the west coast of Vancouver Island. We've rented a beach house with our friends from Body Boat Blade, and with Justine Curgenven and her friend Barry Shaw (a mighty good paddler with a most powerful handshake). The plan is to cram ourselves into these little surf kayaks (thanks to Necky and Valley for the demo boats) and surf all morning, when we get cold we'll go for a soak in the hot tub, then back out to the surf, repeating as necessary until our arms fall off.
Ok, maybe it won't be that ambitious. We'll surf a while, relax a lot, play with our boys, eat great food, and sample some single malt scotch as the sun goes down. No matter what happens we'll be having a great time with some great company, and we'll be on the sea. What more could we want?
More later.....

Oh yeah, I should also report that the Orca whales came by Burrows Island again this morning. It's becoming so common that I'm feeling like I should start marketing "kayaking with whales" to sell trips, like some of those other guys.
Naaaah, I've never felt the need.
