Washington State's Finest Sea Kayaking Tour!
Why is our Outer Islands kayaking program
so special?
The
San Juan Islands contain some of the best sea kayaking locations in
the Washington State. The problem for visitors who wish to go sea kayaking
has always been gaining access to these special places. Only
five islands in the San Juans have ferry service. This means
that nearly
two hundred islands are inaccessible to the majority of people
wanting to explore the region.
This kayak trip has
revolutionized sea kayaking in the San Juan Islands. It is
the only one that allows visitors to the San Juans to be able to experience
such unique sea kayaking destinations in a single day.
If you are on limited time while traveling in
Washington then you'll love what you get
from this experience.
The
solution to the problem of access comes with your mothership, the
Island Express (pictured above). With it's roomy cabin,
comfortable seats, and large viewing windows, the excitement begins the
moment that you leave the dock. Sit back and relax as the beauty
of the San Juan Islands unfolds around you. At a 24 knot cruising
speed this boat quickly takes us to out of the way places that you just
can't get to on any trip from the more populated ferry-served islands.
All of our trips include approximately
1 hour riding the water-taxi (round trip), and 3-4 hours of kayaking
time (which includes gearing up, a brief instruction on the beach, and
a short break mid-trip). This is well within the comfort zone of all
of our guests. These tours have been designed to match the abilities
of all levels of fitness and ability. No Experience Necessary.
If you have never been in a kayak before then this is a great introduction
to one of the fastest growing outdoor activities in the country. Sea
Kayaking is the ultimate in soft adventure, and a great
way to really see what the San Juan Islands are all about.
Where
do we go?
Although we have a variety
of kayaking destinations that we go to depending on weather, wildlife,
and what we fancy will be the best sea kayaking of the day, more and
more trips trips have been going up to Cypress Island
in recent years. Why? Because it is, quite simply, the best destination
for sea kayaking in the area. A phenomenal place, Cypress Island is
the fourth largest of the San Juan Islands and has been protected as
a Natural Resource Conservation Area for years. Over
90% of this island is undeveloped, and much of it has been set aside
as a Natural Area Preserve - the highest level of protection
that Washington State lands can receive (equivalent to Wilderness status
on federal lands). The water surrounding Cypress Island are also very
unique which qualifies it for status as a Marine Protected Area.
Due to protections of both land and sea, Cypress Island boasts
an abundance of wildlife. Seals, porpoise, Bald eagles, and a wide variety
of sea critters can be witnessed on nearly every trip. We are very fortunate
to have this treasure so near to us, it is truly the "last best
place" in the San Juan Islands.

Take control of your vacation time.
Avoid the long lines, tight schedules, and other hassles associated with taking the Washington State Ferry to the San Juans and experience sea kayaking in the Secret Side of the San Juan Islands!

*Please remember that the whales follow their own schedule, not ours. Although we do enjoy kayaking with these magnificent creatures on our trips, the frequency and proximity of sightings are ultimately decided by the whales. We feel that it is misleading and irresponsible for any kayak tour operator to imply that whales will be seen on any given sea kayaking trip.
48 hour notice required for all cancellations. See Rates & Schedules for more information.
